Superman: The Escape was a launched roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain. In July 2010, the ride closed to be rethemed into Superman: Escape from Krypton, which is still operating today.

Ride history[]

The coaster was announced on January 5, 1996. The ride was planned to open on June 1, 1996, but due to problems, its opening was delayed. Previews were held for passholders in fall 1996. After ten months of last-minute engineering, the ride opened on March 15, 1997. In 1999, the ride was closed while new brake fins were installed. Then in June 2004, rider restraints were remodeled to prevent incidents on the ride due to its extreme steepness.

After Independence Day 2010, Superman closed and stood SBNO. The park announced the ride would be rethemed into Superman: Escape from Krypton. The new attraction opened shortly before Memorial Day Weekend. Today, the ride has two Intamin drop towers on both sides, themed after Superman's archenemy, Lex Luthor. The drop towers opened on July 7, 2012.

Ride synopsis[]

Queue[]

The ride's front entrance has a giant "S" embedded into the ground. The entrance area/queue is modeled after Superman's Fortress of Solitude. The station is a bright green, modeled after Krypton, the planet Superman originated from. Inside the fortress is icy crystals to give the Fortress an Arctic feeling (the Fortress is in the Arctic).

Ride experience[]

The attraction has two identical tracks. For a short distance, riders are on flat ground, until the track elevates and gets up to a height of 415 feet. On top of both towers is a Superman dummy.

Trivia[]

Records[]

  • Along with Tower of Terror at Dreamworld, Superman was the world's tallest and fastest coaster.

Statistics[]

  • The ride was going to be named Velocetron.
  • However, designs are still found at the top of the Sky Tower.
  • If Velocetron came to be, the Fortress would be ancient. It would be themed after the Man of Steel.
